It reliably unblocked Netflix in five regions, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer during our testing period. The CleanWeb feature blocks ads and trackers, and the MultiHop option routes through two countries for extra privacy.

Surfshark also includes features that typically cost extra elsewhere. Its Alternative ID tool generates a new online identity with a disposable email for signing up to services. The Surfshark Alert feature monitors data breaches for your email addresses. These are bundled into the Surfshark One plan at no additional cost on higher tiers.

The main trade-off is speed consistency. While average speeds were good, we noticed more variability between servers compared to NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Some servers in congested regions dropped below 70% speed retention during peak hours.

If raw speed is your top priority, ExpressVPN is the one to beat. Its proprietary Lightway protocol consistently delivered the highest speeds in our testing — 95% speed retention on nearby servers and 83% on transatlantic connections. For users on gigabit connections who don't want their VPN to be a bottleneck, ExpressVPN is the clear choice.

Speed isn't the only thing ExpressVPN does well. Its apps are the most polished and intuitive on this list. The one-tap connect experience works identically across Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, and router firmware. If you've ever been frustrated by a VPN app that feels like it was designed by engineers for engineers, ExpressVPN is the antidote.

The TrustedServer technology runs all servers on RAM only — no hard drives. Every server is wiped clean on every reboot, making it physically impossible for data to persist. This has been verified by multiple independent audits from Cure53 and KPMG.

The downside is price. ProtonVPN's no-logs policy has been verified by independent audits from Securitum, and every app is open source, meaning anyone can inspect the code for backdoors or vulnerabilities.

The Secure Core feature routes your traffic through privacy-friendly countries (Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden) before sending it to the exit server. Even if an exit server is compromised or monitored, your real IP remains hidden behind the Secure Core layer. This is a meaningful upgrade over standard double-VPN implementations because the Secure Core servers are located in hardened data centers with strict physical access controls.

In our streaming tests, CyberGhost had the highest success rate of any VPN we tested. The dedicated streaming servers connected on the first try every time during our four-week test period.

CyberGhost also has the largest server network on this list — over 11,500 servers across 100 countries. That sheer volume means you're less likely to hit a congested server, and you have more options for connecting to specific locations.

At $2.03/month on the 3-year plan, it's the cheapest option here. The catch is that CyberGhost's speeds, while perfectly adequate for streaming and browsing, don't match NordVPN or ExpressVPN for demanding use cases like large file transfers or competitive gaming. We measured 86% speed retention — good, but not great.

Privacy is adequate but not at ProtonVPN's level. CyberGhost is based in Romania (outside the Fourteen Eyes), publishes quarterly transparency reports, and has completed a no-logs audit by Deloitte. But its apps are not open source, and it doesn't offer anything equivalent to Secure Core.

How We Tested

We tested each VPN over four weeks using a 500 Mbps base connection. Speed tests were conducted three times daily across five server locations (US East, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia) using Ookla Speedtest and fast.com. We measured download speed, upload speed, and latency for each session.

For privacy, we ran DNS leak tests, WebRTC leak tests, and IPv6 leak tests on each VPN using browserleaks.com and ipleak.net. We reviewed each provider's privacy policy, jurisdiction, audit history, and any past security incidents.
