NordVPN and Surfshark are two of the most popular consumer VPNs, and they're now owned by the same parent company (Nord Security). Despite the shared ownership, they remain distinct products targeting different audiences: NordVPN focuses on premium security features, while Surfshark competes aggressively on price and device limits.

Speed

NordVPN is the faster VPN in our tests. Using its proprietary NordLynx protocol (built on WireGuard), we consistently recorded download speeds above 850 Mbps on a 1 Gbps connection when connecting to nearby servers. Even long-distance connections (US to Europe) maintained 400–500 Mbps, which is more than enough for any consumer use case.

Surfshark is no slouch either. Its WireGuard implementation delivered around 780 Mbps on local connections and 350–450 Mbps on international routes. The gap is noticeable in benchmarks but unlikely to matter in daily use unless you're regularly transferring large files or need peak gaming performance.

Security Protocols

NordVPN's standout security feature is NordLynx, its custom protocol built on the WireGuard framework with an additional double NAT system to address WireGuard's inherent privacy concerns. The company has also invested heavily in RAM-only servers (no data written to disk), Threat Protection (blocking malware, trackers, and ads), and Meshnet (private encrypted networking between your own devices).

Surfshark offers WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN protocols. Its CleanWeb feature blocks ads and trackers, and the MultiHop option routes your traffic through two VPN servers for added anonymity. Surfshark also runs RAM-only servers and has passed independent no-logs audits by Deloitte.

Both VPNs are headquartered in privacy-friendly jurisdictions (NordVPN in Panama, Surfshark in the Netherlands under the company's BV entity), and both have been independently audited multiple times.

Server Network

NordVPN has the larger network: over 6,400 servers across 111 countries. This matters most for finding fast nearby servers and for accessing geo-restricted content from less common locations. NordVPN also offers specialty servers for P2P traffic, double VPN, onion-over-VPN, and dedicated IP addresses.

Surfshark covers 100 countries with 3,200+ servers. While smaller, the coverage includes all the major regions. Surfshark also offers static IP servers and MultiHop configurations.

Streaming

Both VPNs reliably unblock major streaming platforms, but NordVPN has a slight edge in consistency. In our testing, NordVPN successfully accessed Netflix (US, UK, Japan, Australia), Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max on the first server attempt in most cases.

Surfshark also unblocked all the same services, but we occasionally needed to switch servers to find one that worked with certain platforms. The experience was still good — just required an extra step now and then.

Pricing

Surfshark is the clear winner on price. Its 2-year plan comes to approximately $2.29/month, making it one of the cheapest premium VPNs available. NordVPN's 2-year plan costs around $3.49/month for the Standard tier.

NordVPN offers three tiers: Standard (VPN only), Plus (adds Threat Protection Pro and password manager), and Ultimate (adds 1 TB encrypted cloud storage and breach monitoring). The Plus plan at around $4.49/month is the most popular option.

Surfshark offers Starter, One (adds antivirus and alerts), and One+ (adds data removal service). Its One plan at roughly $3.19/month matches NordVPN's Standard pricing.

Device Limits

This is Surfshark's biggest advantage. It allows unlimited simultaneous device connections on a single account. You can protect every device in your household — phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, routers — without worrying about limits.

NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections, which increased from 6 in recent years. Ten devices is enough for most individuals, but families or users with many devices will appreciate Surfshark's unlimited policy.
